There are now alternatives for fitting irregular corneas;
one alternative is Scleral Contact Lenses.

Although Scleral Contact Lenses have been around for over 100 years, they have recently become popular once again. These lenses have a special design that is much larger than a typical contact lens. A Scleral Contact Lenses is supported by the white part of the eye, also known as the sclera, hence the name, Scleral Contact.

For those who have intolerances to contacts, these lenses offer many advantages such as improved comfort and fitting. These lenses are often used by patients who have dry eye, keratoconus and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Scleral contacts may also be beneficial for those with distorted corneas, cornea scarring or chemical burns.

Our practice offers several options for Scleral Lenses. If you think you would be a good candidate, or would like more information, please call our office and ask about Scleral contact lenses.

Our practice specializes in difficult-to-fit contact lens such as those with keratoconus, dry eye, or oddly shaped corneas.

Keratoconus is a condition where the cornea becomes thin and begins to develop a cone-like bulge. This causes an optical distortion and results in poor vision. This condition cannot be corrected with glasses or normal contacts and requires specialty-designed contacts that help reshape or “mold” the cornea into the desired shape.

Other Options

Specialty Soft Contacts

These lenses perform well for those with mild keratoconus or for those with astigmatism.

Gas Permeable lenses

These lenses are smaller in diameter than normal contacts. They help patients with high amounts of astigmatism, or those with more progressive keratoconus.

Synergeyes Duette, ClearKone and Multifocal Hybrid Contact Lenses

These are hybrid contacts with a soft periphery and a rigid oxygen permeable center for the crisp vision of a hard lens, combined with the comfort similar to a soft lens.

Orthokeratology

Special lenses that you only wear from bed time until morning, these lenses gently reshape the cornea for all day clear vision without wearing glasses or contacts.
